This type of Light and Heavy chest was invented by Bill Tressler c. 1995.
Gimpy has released a new version of his very popular Mighty Mini that now allows you to show the bottom of the box. To be fair there is still an impression on the bottom of the box, which is meant to fade over time according to the instructions though I did not see any evidence of this, so you wouldn’t want to spend too long on the bottom, but a quick flash at any time is fine. Which is a significant improvement from the original because there was no way you could get close to the bottom before.
This version of the box seems to stay better too. This is a very nice improvement to an already wonderful and practical version of this effect.
Effect: Everything is self contained and always ready to go with no reset. Use on most lightweight tables with no preparation. No remote controls, no magnets. Operates silently with no wiggle. This light heavy chest is like no other on the market. You just can not lift this chest when it is heavy.
The chest is made of oak with solid brass veneer. It is finished with hand rubbed antique oil that gives it a silky patina. It comes with a comedy pop-off handle that is optional to use as the chest looks normal without it attached. The chest is 6.5 inches square and 4.5 inches tall.
Select a volunteer from the audience. Explain that their strength can be taken away merely by the power of suggestion. Ask them to pick up the box, and they can easily do so. Now explain by putting any light weight object in the box they will be unable to lift the box. Place any light object in the box and they are unable to lift the box. Remove the object and their strength to lift the box is restored. You demonstrate as many times as you wish that the box is very light, but for some reason they can not lift it.
Built to the standards professionals demand, this box will perform flawlessly for years.
